How will my driveway, patio, & walkways hold up to the winter months?
Cracking and heaving are common imperfections in concrete. Temperature changes and the freeze and thaw (ice cube effect) common in winter, contribute to the structural stress of the concrete. Water drain-age is a major cause in the destruction of concrete driveways, erosion of lawns, and heaving of side-walks. Proper installation of drain tile from the down spouts, and correct grading of slopes will alleviate the problem of heaving.
Gravel, Limestone Chip, or Decomposed Gran-ite is the most economical paving option used for acreage driveways, trails and maintenance roads. However, it can pose as a maintenance problem with large amounts of rainfall eroding the surface. A sta-bilizing fabric can help protect it from water damage.
Asphalt provides an incredibly strong and durable driveway. Large amounts of rainfall can cause cracks that will need to be filled with asphalt filler.
Concrete (Plain, or Stamped & Colored) is the most popular paving material. There is little maintenance and concrete is reasonable. For an additional appeal, concrete can be stamped &/or colored. The price of concrete is comparable to stone installation. Concrete can crack, so it is important to incorporate rebar, control joint lines, and wire mesh. Flagstone is comparable in cost to a concrete patio.
Flagstone also varies in price depending on the type of flagstone chosen. Colors range from red, blue, green, to earth tones of tans or brown and variegated stones. Natural stone is a very rustic look and will never fade in color. Other types of stone patios include: cobblestone, limestone, flagstone slate and flagstone pavers. Flagstone joints can be filled with mulch, or polymeric sand, granite chip, river rock, porous pave and then sealed for a wet look.
Pavers are similar in price to stamped concrete. Stamped concrete can crack and pavers will not. Pavers are hand laid on a bedding of angular chip limestone (3-5”) & sand that is packed. Correctly installed pavers offer amazing blends of color, flexibil-ity and amazing strength. In the long run a paver patio is the best investment. Pavers are versatile having the ability to be pulled up and repaired. Pavers variety of options and styles make it a popular investment.
Permeable Pavers virtually eliminates water run-off and allows bio-aqua storm wa-ter systems to irrigate or store water. For more information Click here.
Porous Pave is a new product made from recycled tires, granite, and a bonding agent. This product al-lows storm water to infiltrate through the patio or walkway. The product allows no cracks, tree root growth, frost heave, UV degradation, and is flame re-tardant. The surface is smooth, very strong (withstanding trucks & semis) and salt after added can remain in the pores to melt ice. The products price is comparable to a high end paver installation. But po-rous pave can be a cheap and inexpensive way to overlay concrete and provides spectacular drainage. This product can be used for soil stabilization, erosion control, storm water management, water flow mitiga-tion, canals, dams, underground drainage, jogging trails, traffic islands, tree surrounds, median strips, play ground areas, patios, sidewalks, and courtyards.
